How long it takes to renovate a kitchen in Singapore?

Renovating a kitchen is a significant undertaking that can completely transform the look and feel of your home. For us living in Singapore, it is essential to understand the renovation timeline, as it can have an impact on your move in date. In this blog post, we will provide a detailed overview of how long it takes to renovate a kitchen in Singapore, including the various factors that can affect the timeline.

The kitchen renovation timeline can vary depending on the complexity of the project and the extent of the work required. However, in general a kitchen renovation in Singapore can take anywhere from four weeks to twelve weeks. Let's break down the various stages of a kitchen renovation and how long each stage takes.

Planning Stage (1-2 Weeks)

We usually try not to include this for our clients for the total timeline but the planning stage can go up to 2 weeks or more depending on the number of changes the client requests. The planning stage is the first and most crucial step in any kitchen renovation project. This stage involves working together with the designer to come up with a comprehensive plan for your new kitchen. During this stage, you will select materials, appliances, and finishes, as well as work out any design elements or structural changes you want to make.

Demolition and Preparation (1 Weeks)

Once you have finalized the design lets start the work! The next step is to remove the existing kitchen and prepare the space for the new design. This stage can take anywhere from 1 day to 3 days, depending on the size of your kitchen and the amount of work required. The demolition process involves removing old appliances, cabinets, and countertops, and any structural changes you want to make, such as hacking walls, flooring, or adding windows. We highly recommend you to stay out of the house if your still living in the place for at least the first week.Note that for HDB/Condo you need to apply for a renovation permit before any hacking works. So this is usually applied during the planning phase.

Tiling works(1-2 weeks)

This is of course if your changing your kitchen floor/wall tiles and using tiles as the kitchen backsplash. One of the most common reasons for changing tiles during a kitchen renovation is to update the look and feel of the space. Over time, tiles can become outdated or worn, and replacing them can help to modernize the kitchen and make it more visually appealing. Not forgetting changing the tiles can be a cost-effective way to add value to your home. Potential buyers are often attracted to homes with modern, updated kitchens, and new tiles can be a selling point. In some cases, the existing tiles in a kitchen may be damaged or cracked, and replacing them is necessary to ensure the safety and functionality of the space. This is especially important if the damage is causing water leaks or other issues.

Electrical and Plumbing Work (1-2 days)

Once the demolition and preparation stage is complete, the next step is to install any necessary electrical and plumbing work. This stage involves installing new lighting fixtures, power outlets, switches, and rewiring if necessary. Plumbing work includes installing new pipes, sinks, faucets, and water heaters.) This phase sometimes can start before tiling phase depending on the design and work required. Note there are 2 rounds of electrical and plumbing works. One at the beginning the other at the end.

Measurement and fabrication of Cabinets (2-6 Weeks)

The installation of cabinets is one of the most critical stages of any kitchen renovation project. This stage involves measuring and installing custom cabinetry which can take anywhere from two to six weeks, depending on the size and complexity of your kitchen. The installation process includes first measuring the area where your kitchen is. For the carpenter to start measuring ,all previous phases must be complete accurately, this will prevent any rework or errors in the future

Measurement and fabrication of Kitchen Countertop (1-2 Weeks)

Once the cabinetry is installed we can now measure the kitchen countertop. The countertop is fabricated to the exact specifications of the space. This involves cutting the material to size, shaping it to fit any irregularities in the surface, and smoothing out any rough edges. The measurement, fabrication, and installation phase of a kitchen countertop can take anywhere from a a week to a few weeks (especially nearing CNY) depending on the complexity of the project and the materials being used.

Finishing touches -Electrical, Plumbing and cleaning (1 -2 Days)

It is the stage of the project where most of the major work has been completed, but there are still a few important details that need to be addressed before the project can be considered finished. The plumber needs to come in to fix the sink and install the faucet. The electrician needs to come in to install any electrical components that were done during the first round of electrical works, such as switches, outlets, and LED lights, and make sure they are all properly wired and functioning.

During the course of the renovation, dust and debris can accumulate on surfaces and in the air, and cleaning is necessary to ensure that the kitchen is safe, hygienic, and ready for use. The cleaning process involve wiping down all surfaces, including cabinets, countertops, and appliances, to remove any dust and debris that may have accumulated during the renovation.

Final Thoughts

it's clear that there is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question of how long it takes. However, by working with experienced professionals, setting a realistic timeline, and planning for potential delays, homeowners can ensure a smoother and more efficient renovation process.

Ultimately, the timeline of a kitchen renovation will depend on a variety of factors, including the size and complexity of the project, the materials chosen, and the level of customization required. By being patient and flexible, you can achieve your dream kitchen while minimizing the stress and disruption that can come with any renovation project. So if you're considering a kitchen renovation in Singapore, take the time to do your research, consult with experts, and plan carefully to ensure a successful outcome.
